Britons are missing out on an average saving of £252 in free boiler cover according to new figures from HomeServe. The home emergency specialist found that six in ten (64%) people who purchased new boilers this year had not registered for the warranty that came free with the product.
Those who experienced problems with their boilers tended not to consider manufacturers as an option, with most electing to approach their energy providers or local gas engineers for assistance. This despite the fact that boiler manufacturers-such as
Vaillant,
Ideal and
Ferroli often offered free protection on their boilers - in some cases as long as seven years.
HomeServe CEO Jonathan King : "With the economy still shaky and the day to day cost of living starting to soar, it's more important than ever that people practice smart spending.
Customers are wasting huge amounts of money paying for boiler engineers, when manufacturers often already offer free assistance via their free guarantee scheme.
"These guarantees are supported by nationwide networks of engineers and these engineers are able to provide high first time fix rates. In the majority of cases, the customer must register within 30 days to receive the full period of cover. They should ask their installer for the guarantee registration documents if they have not received them."
That said, those who register outside of the 30 day period may still be eligible for a standard one year guarantee. Contact the manufacturer directly and check if you are unsure, rather than spending money unnecessarily.
