A-Z of items you can recycle in Chiswick
Jan 26, 2025
Every year brings a host of new decluttering trends as evidenced by the new ones popping up on social media. Increasingly, people want to recycle and reduce waste, rather than send things to landfill.
It is easy to feel overwhelmed if you have a lot of items you no longer need or want. Plus, it’s not always easy to understand what goes where. London Borough of Hounslow's new Waste Wizard is an online tool and app designed to make recycling your unwanted items quicker and easier. It takes out the guesswork and streamlines the process into manageable tasks.
SHOES, ELECTRICALS, LEFTOVER PAINT ...
The Waste Wizard helps you find out how you can repair, recycle or reuse your old items for the benefit of the whole community.
Type in the name of the item you want to dispose of (for example - MATTRESS, FURNITURE, LIGHT BULBS) and the tool links to advice on how to recycle, repair, reuse or dispose of it. For example, 'shoes' brings up 2 options 'paired' or 'single':
• Single - place in your 140L or 240L kerbside bin or communal 1100L bulk bin.
• Paired - will be collected as well as old clothing and textiles on your scheduled weekly collection day. Place in a clearly marked plastic bag, alongside your recycling boxes.
If you search 'leftover paint' you are directed to a hidden gem of a scheme called Community RePaint. This scheme accepts cans of leftover usable paint via local drop-off points. The nearest drop off point to the W4 postcode area is in Richmond.
W4 Residents just need to visit the Council’s website to find the online tool or go to the Apple or Google Play app stores to download - search for 'LB Hounslow Waste Wizard'.
