Advice for Chiswick's trick or treaters
Oct 29, 2016
Dressing up for trick or treating should be fun but children and their parents need to follow a few basic rules. Advise children to behave in a considerate and orderly way and treat others with respect.
Only visit residents that are happy to welcome trick or treaters
You can tell by the Hallowe'en decorations, the number of house lights that are on and if there are plenty of trick or treaters already on the streets. Don’t knock on doors where there is a ‘No Trick or Treat’ sign – privacy and peace should be respected.
Be visible and look carefully before crossing roads
Moving about in the dark in costume adds to the adventure factor but it’s crucial that children can be seen, especially by cars. Parents should dress their children in brightly coloured costumes or wear glow-in-the-dark accessories. Stay in areas that are well lit with streetlights – take a torch with you just in case. Be careful not to frighten vulnerable people, especially the elderly.
An adult should always escort younger children
And older children need to understand how to stay safe and respect the wishes of other residents who do not want to be disturbed. For young people who don’t like their parents hanging around, adults can wear costumes too and hang back so as not to cramp their style.
Travel in groups
For young people old enough to trick or treat without their parents—ages 12 and up—going with a group of friends is the best way to ensure safety. Choose 3 or more friends, stay together the entire time and don’t get separated. Carry a mobile phone to keep parents informed. Parents should determine a rendezvous point in advance, should a child get separated or lost. And they should be available in the event of any trouble.
Stay on the doorstep
Make sure children are aware not to enter anyone’s house. Of course, this practical advice applies in all situations and not just while trick-or-treating.
Stick to this plan and your children will have a safe and fun experience while you have peace of mind.
