Bovingdon Road, Sands End, Fulham, London, SW6

Dec 7, 2011
Bovingdon Road is situated in the locality of Sands End, within the area of Fulham. In 1820 the Imperial Gas Company bought the land that was known as the Sandford Estate which was a large market garden up until this time. As the company built the gasworks they also built housing for the workers and named many of the streets after well known locals. For instance, Bagley’s Lane is named after the Bagley family, locally known for market gardening and were called the ‘Kings of Fulham’. During the Second World War the gas tanks were heavily protected from German air raids with barrage balloons as they were sighted as key targets. Ironically after the war Germans were given jobs at the gasworks and houses in Imperial Square when British workers went on strike due to bad pay.
