Bowerdean Street, The Peterborough Estate, Fulham, London, SW6

Dec 8, 2011
Bowerdean Street is situated in the locality of the Peterborough Estate, within the area of Fulham. In 1773 The Earl of Peterborough built the original Peterborough House and magnificent grounds on the site of today’s Peterborough Estate. At the time of sale of his estate the main house was demolished and then rebuilt in 1831 to become the Peterborough Hotel, Fulham Benevolent Society and later a public house. Starting in 1890 the builder J. Nichols built the famous ‘Lion Houses’ so named as each property features a stone lion. Local legend suggests that the lions were not initially intended and whilst the builders were placing an order for 10’s, mistakenly the order was placed for 100’s.
