Brentford, as the name suggests, was built on a fording point on the River Brent formally known as Brentforda in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 1016. It is said that Julius Caesar crossed the Thames at Brentford during the invasion of Britain. The settlement pre-dates the Roman occupation of Britain, and thus pre-dates the founding of London itself. In 1805 operations began on the Grand Junction Canal which became the Grand Union Canal on the 1st January 1929.
Duing the 20th century Brentford took an industrial path and consequently fell behind in building residential developments compared to many other areas. As the industry has moved away it is now predominantly residential combined with some of London's largest corporate headquarters. Modern and eye catching.
Brentford is located North of the river Thames, East of Syon Lane, South of Boston Manor & South Ealing and West of Gunnersbury.
