Exercise caution when letting property in Chiswick

Jul 22, 2010

Only appoint licensed agents to let your Chiswick property.

MPs demonstrate their concern at the lack of regulation for the lettings market in Parliament.

Licenced ARLA (Association of Residential Lettings Agents) member Christian Harper of Chiswick estate agent OliverFinn, has long canvassed for Chiswick lettings agents to be regulated.

“As a qualified surveyor, valuer and estate agent, I believe the present situation is wrong. Currently anyone can set themselves up as a lettings agent in W4. This has got to be bad news for unsuspecting landlords thinking of renting their houses and flats in Chiswick.

More than 60 MPs have now signed an Early Day Motion (EDM )supporting a call to create a national register of landlords and further regulation of landlords and letting agents.

The EDM outlines the role that the private rented sector plays in supporting the UK housing market but that rogue landlords and lettings agents pose a threat to consumers. The Property Ombudsman has already noted that the number of complaints has risen.

Last month Housing Minister, Grant Shapps, announced his intention to scrap plans to introduce a national register for private landlords and regulate managing and lettings agents. This news prompted MPs to get behind the EDM.

Shapps has since pledged to work with ARLA to develop an industry-led solution to remove unprofessional letting agents from the market.

Ian Potter, operations manager, ARLA: “We greatly appreciate the support that the MPs have offered with this EDM. Until the current status quo is changed via national regulation, unprofessional, unqualified and unethical operators will continue to prey at the expense of the general public.”
