Local History
Brentford, as the name suggests, was built on a fording point on the
River Brent formally known as Brentforda in the
Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 1016. It is said that
Julius Caesar crossed the Thames at Brentford during the invasion of Britain. The settlement pre-dates the Roman occupation of Britain, and thus pre-dates the founding of London itself. In 1805 operations began on the Grand Junction Canal which became the
Grand Union Canal on the 1st January 1929.
