Goldhawk Road, Stamford Brook, Hammersmith, London, W6

Nov 28, 2011
Goldhawk Road is situated in the locality of Stamford Brook, within the area of Hammersmith. Stamford Brook is the confluence of three smaller streams, arising in West London, flowing into Hammersmith Creek and thence into the River Thames. The brook starts from a spring at Springfield Gardens in Acton. By 1900, the brook had been covered over and is now a sewer. The name may be a corruption of 'stoney ford' or 'sandy ford' by which it was crossed by King Street. Stamford Brook has given its name to the surrounding area between Hammersmith and Chiswick and to local London Underground station, Stamford Brook tube station. Plans have been proposed as of 2008 to bring Stamford Brook to the surface at Hammersmith by putting the A4 underground.
