As with our health, prevention is better than cure when it comes to maintaining your period house in Chiswick.
Arts and Crafts pioneer and radical socialist William Morris founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) in 1877. The Tabard pub and theatre on Bath Road in
Bedford Park, near Turnham Green station, is one of the best known William Morris interiors in Chiswick.
Morris spoke of the need ‘to stave off decay by daily care, to prop a perilous wall or mend a leaky roof’. SPAB’s aim is to highlight the importance of regular health checks for buildings, whatever their age. Neglecting routine building maintenance will inevitably result in costly repairs.
SPAB provides a quick checklist to help you protect your building and to establish when advice and assistance is needed. The checklist covers the roof, gutters and pipes, drainage, walls, joinery and chimney flues with advice on timber defects, dampness, flooding and subsidence.
