Moving day at No 10

Jul 16, 2016
The main story this week is, of course, the new Prime Minister Theresa May's move to Downing Street. Although No 10 is the PM's official residence, Theresa May will live at No 11, where Mr Cameron and his family spent the last six years. The new PM’s sudden takeover left her predecessor with just 48 hours’ notice to leave the two storey family flat above No 11. The new Premier offered to stay in her Westminster apartment with husband Philip for a few more days. The break with the tradition of the PM residing at No 10, began in 1997 when Tony Blair swapped Gordon Brown's larger Chancellor's flat with the one at No 10 to provide room for his then three children. Both houses are linked by a corridor. Where will the Ex-PM now reside? For the time being it will be in a seven-bedroom property in Holland Park. The house is owned by his friend Sir Alan Parker, who runs a PR company. Celebrity residents are said to include David Beckham, Simon Cowell, Sir Elton John, Robbie Williams and Sir Richard Branson. Unsurprisingly, the presence of heavily armed police outside the new Cameron abode has unsettled neighbours. However it is only a temporary move while their own property in neighbouring Notting Hill is still rented out. Eventually the family will move back into their own home when the tenants move out.
