Bananas, chocolate and coffee are products that we associate with fair trade but the principles extend to clothing and homewares. Fair trade businesses work closely with small farmers and artisans to ensure good wages, safe working conditions, environmental responsibility and economic growth.
The ideals of fair trade are at the heart of Chiswick-based
Artisanne, a business that works directly with Senegal basket weavers. The company is the brainchild of two sisters, Elizabeth and Emma, who grew up on South Parade. Their baskets are stocked by
Cassius & Coco on Turnham Green Terrace.
The sisters discovered the items while living in and visiting Senegal over the last six years - buying baskets for their own homes for laundry, children’s toys and household knick-knacks. They soon began to look for ways to bring the work of these talented Senegalese women to every home.
Elizabeth: “We are working on gaining our Fair Trade certification as it means the world to us. We love collaborating with our weavers and without the human element; Artisanne would never have grown into what it is today. So think Fair Trade and what it means to your home this October.”
