A: None. Their parents do it.
Home improvements worth £1,280, are carried out by parents for their adult children after they've left home, spending an hour a week doing DIY.
According to home insurer Aviva, 55% of parents of long-gone children are still called on to help their offspring with home improvements.
While help with the garden (47%); painting (46%) and building and assembling furniture (34%) are the most common, some adult children need help with very easy tasks – 9% ask for parental help in bleeding radiators and 8% can't even change a light bulb on their own.
More than half of parents (52%) give up their leisure time to help their kids, with a fifth foregoing their own household tasks and 18% putting off their own DIY jobs or gardening to help their children out.
Cost of help
And parents don't think their children are inclined to do it themselves if they couldn't help – 42% said their offspring would wait for Mum and Dad to be available and 40% said they'd pay for an expert rather than do the job themselves.
And it's not only their expertise that children are benefiting from: typically they spend an average of £334 per year on buying materials and goods to help with their kids' household improvements.
