The bathroom beats the office for inspiration

Jul 27, 2013
The nation's thinkers spend over a year in the bathroom during their lifetimes. According to new research, 40% of the nation claims their best eureka moments happen when they are having a soak in the tub or standing under a shower. In fact, our bathrooms beat the workplace hands down with only a mere 12 per cent finding inspiration in the office. And with the average Brit now spending at least 22 minutes in the bathroom every day - or over a year (449 days) during a typical lifetime - that's a lot of ideas to be had. A place for reflection and texting The findings also show that the humble British toilet is a place for reflection with almost a quarter (24 per cent) of Brits citing this as the most popular thing - aside from the obvious - they do on the loo. Reading a newspaper or magazine comes a close second with almost a fifth of the nation (18 per cent). However, next time you receive a text from a youthful friend or relative spare a thought for where they may have written it - almost a third (32 percent) of 18 - 24 year olds admitted to texting whilst on the loo. It's a matter of etiquette Men are still not learning their lesson when it comes to the age old ‘toilet-seat-left-up issue’. Almost half (45 per cent) of Britain's long suffering women still note this as one of their biggest peeves - a fact lost on the ninety per cent of men who didn't see that as a problem at all. However, both sexes agree that an empty toilet roll really takes the biscuit. Bathroom blunders As well as acting as a haven and a place to relax, it seems our toilets and bathrooms can also be a headache. Blocking the toilet still ranks at the top of the list of worst bathroom disasters (46 per cent), closely followed by finding a spider in the bath (42 per cent) - although amongst women finding a spider beats a blocked toilet every time (49 per cent versus 44 per cent). Women are also more likely to drop their mobile down the toilet with one in seven (14 per cent) admitting to the faux pas versus 10 per cent of men. The survey was conducted by Dyno-Rod on OnePoll in June 2013 to mark it’s 50th anniversary.
