Chiswick gardens transform into extra seasonal living and dining rooms... weather permitting, of course.
Many congratulations to the
winner of this year’s Bedford Park front gardens competition in Queen Anne’s Grove, and also to the highly commended runner up, in Marlborough Crescent. Well done too to local garden design
duo Ruth Willmott and Frederic Whyte based in Heathfield Terrace W4, for netting a silver medal at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
As the recession continues, the garden is an important extension of our living area - especially in Chiswick properties, where entertaining space is highly prized by buyers and tenants. More than half of us are spending more time at home to save money.
Indeed, 57% of Brits will be using their gardens to relax and entertain throughout summer, as revealed in a recent survey by garden designer Floral & Hardy.
Seasonal extension
Christian Harper of Chiswick estate agents
OliverFinn: “Gardens are a valuable commodity for people looking to move to Chiswick. If you can, maximise any garden space by bringing the outdoors in. Opening up the back of the property, adding seating areas, barbecues and outdoor lighting etc. all combine to add extra entertaining space which is very attractive to prospective buyers and tenants."
However gardening is only our third favourite summer garden activity with 17% choosing this option. A significant 29% of respondents plan to relax with a good book and 28% will use their outdoor space to entertain friends and serve food. Here are summer garden activities in order of popularity:
- 1) Reading and relaxing (29%)
- 2) Having a barbeque or entertaining (28%)
- 3) Gardening (17%)
- 4) Watching wildlife (9%)
- 5) Sunbathing (8%)
- 6) Playing with children in sand pits, paddling pools or trampolines (5%)
- 7) Playing football or sports (4%)
According to
Phil Spencer, presenter of Location, Location, Location and later Relocation, Relocation, glass doors are a good idea: "View the garden as another room; install decking (£250 up to £5,000) and you can add two per cent to the house value."
