The annual Cancer Research Boat Races between rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities this year take place on Sunday 27th March.
Locally, there are good viewing points on the Middlesex bank all the way from The Dove to Dukes Meadow, and
Chiswick Pier is one of the best. One of the crews often puts in a decisive push at this stage.
The Fulham/Chiswick side of the course is known as the Middlesex side. The Putney/Barnes side is known as the Surrey side. This year there are four squads of athletes in all, as for the first time, the women’s races take place on the same day as the men’s. Here is the 2016 schedule:
∆ 3.10pm The Cancer Research UK Boat Race
∆ 3.25pm Osiris-Blondie
∆ 3.40pm Isis-Goldie
∆ 4.10pm The Cancer Research UK Boat Race
The boats are expected to pass Chiswick Pier around 11 minutes after the start times when you can watch the crews power upstream from Chiswick Eyot past the Pier and through to the final bend before Barnes Railway Bridge. At Pier House you can watch the start and finish of the race on the big screen and walk outside to see the live action as the boats pass.
At 4 miles 374 yards
the course offers numerous free spectator opportunities. Bishops Park near Putney Bridge and Furnivall Gardens near Hammersmith have big screens, refreshments and entertainment while the locations identified on this
map are amongst the best to get a good view of the crews as they pass.
